How to read it
The middle column is the one that matters. A category's cheapest tool is usually its smallest single piece and its dearest is usually a multi-piece set, so the span says more about packaging than about quality. The middle price is what a typical tool in that category costs.
Where the money goes
Three things move a price in this range: the amount of steel, the number of pieces, and whether the tool is cast iron. A cast press costs more than a stainless one of the same size because the metal is heavier and the casting is slower. A five-piece cutter set costs more than a single cutter because it is five cutters. Neither difference is a quality claim, and we do not dress it up as one.
